Double bill - London Premiere: Cheryl Dunn's Everybody Street and Nick Turpin's In-Sight

Each film will be introduced by the film maker, followed by a Q&A session with Cheryl Dunn and Nick Turpin.

Everybody Street

In 2010, the Seaport Museum of New York approached Cheryl Dunn to make a short documentary about photographers who have used New York City street life as a major subject in their work. The result was a 36 minute long documentary, an intimate portrait of the work of New York’s most iconic street photographers including Bruce Davidson, Mary Ellen Mark, Bruce Gilden, Joel Meyerowitz, Martha Cooper and Ricky Powell. The film pays tribute to the spirit of New York street photography through a cinematic exploration of the city (shot on 16mm film), intercut with interviews, photographs, and candid footage of artists working from the 1930’s through today.

Cheryl Dunn is a documentary/street filmmaker and photographer based in New York City. Her films have played at festivals all over the world including Tribeca, Edinburgh, Rotterdam, Los Angeles and Havana, and on PBS. Her work has been exhibited at numerous galleries & museums, including Deitch Projects in NY and in the recently opened Art in the Streets exhibitions at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in LA. Dunn was one of the subjects of Aaron Rose’s generation-defining documentary, book & traveling museum exhibition Beautiful Losers. Her photographs have been published in Vogue, Elle, Harpers Bazaar, Spin and Dazed & Confused, among others, and she has had two books of her photographs published - Bicycle Gangs of New York (2005) and Some Kinda Vocation (2007).

In-Sight

In-Sight is a film that gets behind the camera and into the minds of In-Public photographers in action on the street. Filmed in the UK, US, Holland and Australia using innovative miniature camera technology that places you right on the hotshoe, the film reveals the photographers approaches, motivations and techniques. Walk with David Gibson through London's East End, push through the crowds of 5th Avenue with Melanie Einzig or follow Jesse Marlow through the streets of Melbourne. In-Sight was commissioned for FORMAT11 and directed by Nick Turpin.

Nick Turpin studied photography, film and video at the University of Westminster leaving in 1990 to join the staff of The Independent newspaper for seven years. He has worked for a decade as a design and advertising photographer in Europe and the States but is best known for his support and promotion of street photography. In January 2000 Turpin founded the In-Public street photographey collective which has played a major role in bringing street photography to the wide audience it enjoys today. In 2009 he started Nick Turpin Publishing in order to provide a printed outlet for street photography. He has also taught photography at galleries, universities and on TV & radio.
