The Global Street and the Long Term Project, a five-day workshop by award-winning photographer George Georgiou.

The workshop will help you consider the Global Street as a subject and concept for contemporary photographic practice with the specific focus of working towards a long term project. Incorporating practical tuition, assignments, group and individual feedback, the workshop will give participants the tools they need to embark on or continue a substantial body of work. The workshop will take place from Wednesday to Sunday (inclusive) and will culminate in a slideshow of work produced at the festival closing event on Sunday 17 July.

The first day will be spent in the classroom looking at George's work, influential street photography practitioners and the students' own work to date. The following days will mainly be spent shooting in the streets and working towards beginning or continuing a long-term project. George will spend time with each student while they are out shooting giving individual tuition and advice. At the end of each day the group will reconvene for discussion and feedback. On the final day, students will edit their work and prepare it for presentation at the festival closing event.

WHO IS IT FOR?
• Professional or amateur photographers interested in expanding their practice and developing a long-term project.
• Photographers who are comfortable with their cameras and the manual controls - this is not a technical course so you should have a good understanding of the manual settings on your camera.
• You may shoot in film or digitally, however we strongly advise you work digitally to benefit from maximum feedback and critiques.

George Georgiou has photographed extensively in the Balkans, Eastern Europe and Turkey for the last decade, living and working in Serbia, Greece and for nearly five years in Istanbul. His work has focuses on transition and identity and how people negotiate the space they find themselves in. Georgiou has exhibited his work in solo shows across the globe. Awards include two World Press Photo prizes in 2003 and 2005, The British Journal of Photography project prize 2010, Pictures of the Year International first prize for Istanbul Bombs in 2004 and a Nikon Press Award UK for photo essay 2000.

Fault Lines
In this book, Georgiou’s photographs explore and question this concept of East/West and the many complex fault lines at play in contemporary Turkey and global issues around urbanisation and development. Traveling across the country and focusing on everyday life and the dramatically altered rural landscape, the work captures the effects of this modernisation and urbanisation on Turkey's national and cultural psyche against a backdrop of raising nationalism and religion at a time when Turkey finds itself at a political crossroads, a crossroads that will define it's very future.
